Comprising a Life

The Bonsai, Travels and Haiku of Vaughn Banting

The story of my dirt track and its recent conversion to a grass track

Behind my current Zen Garden there is a section of my property that first housed bonsai in training and then when I could no longer work on my trees due to declining health, a dirt track (later converted to a grass track to discourage erosion) for my various power chairs and handicapped scooters. It serves as a place for handicapped friends and other friends to just have some uncomplicated fun.

When what is now a dirt track served as a training area for my bonsai collection (shown here are some visitors from Japan)

Picture from when this same area was briefly used for my X wife's grandchildren

Looking from my current Zen garden into the space that I turned into my dirt track

Constructing new dirt track

Neighborhood kid planting a fake Boulder for me

Trying out spacings of rock placements with another neighborhood kid

Checking for enough space to go around all the rock groupings

Doing figure eights using four-wheel scooters

The rocks proving to be placed just right

Dirt track using just motorized wheelchairs

Practicing avoiding head-on collisions

When the electric scooters and motorized wheelchairs are all in use, driving gets a little dicey but a lot of fun

Adding more soil to create topography on the track

Continuing to add soil

Soil placed to bank the curves

Dirt track topography improved and Japanese maples added. More plant material will be added as the dirt track develops.
